Rose Hill Cottage
1,761 square feet / 4 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms
Rose Hill Cottage was our first personal “grown-up” house. That is to say, a house whose appearance and siting conjure thoughts of family at Christmastime, Sundays cutting grass, and kids playing in the backyard. We no longer live there, but our son still refers to it as “our brick house.” It was the birthplace of HubbHouse as a passion-turned-career concept and a laboratory for countless design experiments; some whose results still appear in every HubbHouse. Some minor structural gymnastics allowed the interior of the home to be opened up a bit more, facilitating better visual and physical connections between spaces. Surfaces were carefully peeled back, revealing the structure beneath and adding spatial drama to those rooms. The material palette combined the richness of American black walnut and local soapstone with bright whites in varying finishes that provided nuanced control over reflected and absorbed light.
